| | | | | Military Agreement Signed: Colombia & US by Jianyou He | | | A latest piece of news reveals that an agreement has been on its way on the part of the two neighboring countries: the US and Colombia. Many news reporters wearing kinds of lanyards have confirmed the news. They said this is a big political movement, which to different people will have different impacts on the situation of this region.
This agreement was met strong opposition from Colombia’s adjacent countries, such as Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia. In this way, tensions flared on a continual basis. More and more peace-lovers went on the street. Silicone wristbands and posters were the tools to show their strong disapproval. Slogans such as “NO WARS, PEACE” are printed on rubber bracelets of all kinds of colors. Protestors march along the boulevard, with a lot more supporters joining in this parade.
Why this agreement has brought so many objections from neighboring countries?
Let’s look back what happened to the two countries last Friday. It is on this date that Columbia and the USA signed this agreement, which gives more possibilities to expand the American military presence at the bases in Colombia. Two top officials came from the respective government, i.e. Colombia's Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez and U.S. ambassador in Bogota, William Brownfield.
With regard to the very aim of this agreement, Jaime Bermudez, Colombia's Foreign Minister, explained that they wanted to get rid of the drug dealing and terrorist activities in this country. This is what he gave to the international community. He also added that this agreement should be mutual-beneficial, or multi-beneficial for all the nations within the Latin American area.
However, this is not in line with what Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s worry. He claimed that the US military ambition can never be so short-sighted, it is suspiciously larger that the very end to meet. Both the agreement and its aftermath will destabilized the region.
