Connect by Communication

How often do you communicate with your clients? Do you ever send them a quick note to say hi, or to see how things are going? Or are your only communications with clients limited to business transactions? When you are running a small business, communication is essential to keeping and building a strong client base.

Many business owners take for granted the single most important factor in their business – quality clients! Take a minute to think about that. If you didn’t have your clients, you wouldn’t have much of a business at all now, would you? So why is it that business owners are continuously forgetting about their clients, or simply wait passively for their clients to contact them? There are dozens of reasons that it happens – lack of knowledge, lack of time, laziness. Whatever the reason, it’s time to change.

So what’s the magic trick for communicating with clients? There is no big secret involved, the answer is very simple – communication. By simply communicating with your clients on a regular basis you will be in the forefront of their minds, and the first person that they think of when they need a job done.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, making regular contact with clients should be fun and easy. Some simple ways to do this are by sending out email newsletters, letting them know what’s going on, new services, and advertising any specials that you may have. But it also pays to be a bit more personal as well. During your usual reading of the morning news, if you come across any articles that relate particularly to certain clients why not clip them out and send them on with a personalized note. It lets people know that you are thinking of them.

Many people do Christmas cards, but why not stand out at a different time of year with Easter cards, or Memorial Day cards? You’ll definitely stand out from the crowd at a different time of year then everyone else, plus you will be catching clients at a less frenzied time of the year.

The important thing to remember when it comes to communicating with clients is to keep it fun but professional. Don’t wait for them to come to you when they need a job done. Regular contact will keep you at the forefront and they will be sure to think of you when something comes up.
