| | | | | How To Keep Your Home Free of Mosquitoes by Katrina Robinson by Katrina Robinson | | | Summer's right around the corner, and we all know what that means: great times spent outside in the sun…with the mosquitoes. Those pesky insects can virtually ruin any type of outdoor activity or event, and they're particularly annoying when they take over your yard. But there is good news—there are several things you can do to help keep your home free of mosquitoes. Check out the following tips, and feel free to share any of your own:
• Get rid of anything lying around that can hold water. This includes old tires, aluminum cans, buckets, plastic sheeting, etc. If possible, turn over any items that regularly accumulate water when they're not being used—such as pet dishes, trash cans, etc.
• Make it a point to change water in wading pools and bird baths at least once a week to discourage mosquitoes from laying eggs. You may even want to consider populating your ornamental pools with mosquito-eating fish. Otherwise, you can use Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) tablets, which are available at garden stores. These tablets kill mosquitoes and other larvae and should be replaced once a month during the summer months.
• Consider adding some sort of circulation feature to your wading or ornamental pool. This could be accomplished by using a fountain or other aeration device.
• Do your best to keep your swimming pool clean and chlorinated.
• Keep your rain gutters clean of debris by cleaning them out regularly. When gutters become clogged, they are the ideal breeding sites for mosquitoes. If you're not big on cleaning gutters, install gutter guards to prevent debris from falling into and clogging your gutters.
• Repair any leaking air conditioning units or faucets that produce pools around your home. These puddles attract mosquitoes.
• Carefully irrigate your garden and/or lawn to prevent the possibility of water standing for several days.
• Get rid of ditches and swampy areas by filling or draining them. Water that accumulates in these types of areas encourages mosquito breeding.
• After it rains, do a careful evaluation of your yard. Empty out any standing water from items such as potted plant saucers.
• Place a couple of insect traps around the areas that you populate the most, such as your patio or outdoor dining area.
• Make sure your screen doors and windows are free of rips or tears so that mosquitoes can’t enter your home.
• Drill holes in the bottom of your garbage and recycling containers that are stored outdoors. This will discourage any accumulated water from standing and attracting mosquitoes.
Did you know it only takes mosquitoes a couple of days to lay their eggs in standing water? That's why it's such a big deal to minimize standing water around your home and in your yard. By following the above tips, you can help to prevent any sort of mosquito infestation and make this summer as bug-free as possible!
