| | | | | Inner CIty Decline by Rainbow Colours | | | | Population decline is one of the characteristics of inner city decline. The people of working age and with job skills tend to move out of the inner city areas in search of work and better living standards. Besides that is economic decline. There are limited and decreasing job opportunities as factories and offices close. Inner city areas generally fail to attract new industries because of their problems of dereliction and decline. Inner city decline can also be identified by the increase in poverty and deprivation. Social conditions include a higher than average percentage of the poor, the elderly, the unskilled, ethnic minorities, single-parent families and the homeless. There are often areas of multiple and social urban deprivation. Some of the causes of such decline are decentralization. The suburbs offered the promise of greater space and less pollution. There was a boom in new house building on cheap edge-of-city land, and this encouraged movement away from the inner cities. However, most minorities and immigrants have found it extremely difficult to ‘break out’ to higher quality housing areas elsewhere. These groups of people lack the physical mobility to gain access to suburban housing and employment. Therefore, as the more fortunate households have left to outer suburban areas, the inner city decline became concentrated with a large number of poorer ethnic minorities. Apart from that, deindustrialization too caused inner city decline. Traditional industries declined, while those remaining shed much of the labor force due to improved technology and falling demand such as shipbuilding and textiles. Many factories relocate to LDCs as there was a loss of competitiveness in the DCs due to cramped and overcrowded road networks, higher labor costs, lack of space for expansion and outdated factories and machinery as compared to newer producing countries in LDCs. Manufacturing employment also declined as there was a rapid increase in automation and mechanization which reduced the demand for labor. The decline had caused derelict and unattractive environment which meant that new firms avoided the inner cities. | | | | Article Source : Article-treasure.com | | Publication date : 04-24-2011 | | | | Article by Rainbow Colours | | | | author's referral can be found at the website url. | | | | Keywords : florists | | | | | |
