Wedding Insurance for When Things Go Wrong

The Law of Averages:
Which? revealed in 2008 that the average cost of a wedding last year was around £17,000. The details how of this figure can be broken down are obviously individual to each couple but WeddingGuideUK.com drew on their experience and research to collate the following in terms of average spend for individual items:
Wedding Dress - £700
Bridal Bouquet - £75
Civil/Church Fees - £200
Photography - £400
Wedding Cake - £200
Entertainment - £500
Honeymoon - £1,500

Focus on the Things You Love:
A good idea when you set about working out your budget is working out what parts of the occasion are important to you. Some couples may want to concentrate their spending on the wedding breakfast while others may want to limit the amount they spend on the reception to allow them to afford the honeymoon of their dreams.

Once you’ve worked out where you want the lion’s share of your money to go make a note of it to ensure you don’t get distracted by small details that crop up along the way, which can really build up over time.

Family Value:
Another thing to take into account when budgeting is what things you can save on by recruiting talented friends and family. Got a great aunt who’s a whiz at flower arranging, a sister who’s got a talent for baking and might turn her hand to wedding cakes, or even a cousin who’ll wow your guests with a DJ set? Rope them into getting involved, allowing you to save some of that budget for another part of the day.

While you might want to get your wedding dress made professionally, why not consider saving money on bridesmaid dresses by getting them made by a friend or family member or getting them from the high street?

Making Sure You Insurance is Adequate:
Perhaps you’ll be able to rope in family members to help you save some pennies, or perhaps you’ve got a budget that would make any father of the bride weep! Either way you’ll need to make sure that you’ve got a wedding insurance policy to cover the cost of your day.

Wedding insurance policies tend to allow you to select the cover you need, depending on how much you think you’ll be spending.

It’s a good idea to take out wedding insurance as soon as you start paying deposits, as this is the point at which you become financially vulnerable. Reception venues tend to require deposits and can need to be booked up to 18 months in advance, so this could be the point to look at your wedding insurance options.
Working out what level of cover you think you’ll need at the beginning of the planning process will require a bit of thought, why not print out this handy wedding budget planner and put rough estimates next to everything involved in the big day. That should give you a rough total to work to.

Things Change
Most insurers understand that however strict you are with your budget, costs can snowball. Before you take out your wedding insurance policy you may want to confirm with your insurer that you can upgrade your cover at any time. Then, once you’re insured, don’t forget to keep an up-to-date record of what you've spent to ensure your wedding insurance cover is adequate for the scale and cost of your wedding.

Dream dresses, must-have bouquets and fabulous entertainers can all contribute to budgets spiraling out of control. The art of avoiding total wedding melt-down is to tread the fine line between making it the best day of your life and remembering that you’ve got to leave yourselves a bit of money for your lives together post-wedding! Whatever amount of money you decide to invest in your wedding, above all make sure you have insurance to protect it - for better or worse!
