Improve Your Thumb-Sucking Child's Confidence by Helping Him Stop Today

Thumb sucking is thought to be normal behavior in infants and small toddlers. Once it reaches past this age it can cause serious emotional issues in the child and lower their self-confidence.

The reason it affect the child’s self-confidence is as they get older and go to school or start to have playmates with other children they can become victims of teasing because of the habit. Children who are teased and made fun of are proven to have a lower self-esteem and have issues dealing with public situations out of fear of being made fun of.

So how do you help your child stop this habit and boost his confidence levels? Easy, the first is to find out why your child is sucking his thumb in the first place. Once you know the reason you can better understand how to help them.

Explain to your child the reason why they should not suck their thumb, explaining all of the health concerns it can cause. This can sometimes be enough for them to want to stop on their own. If not, develop some kind of reward program where you can work with your child in stopping the habit. Give them a reward such as a new toy or a trip to the park. This will make them want to stop and help them feel better as a whole.

Confidence boosting can be done in many ways; a simple praising of your child when they do something good can raise their confidence levels immensely. Be sure to praise your child for not sucking their thumb and never scold them for continuing to do so. Scolding them or taking away a favorite activity or toy can actually make them turn to the habit even more as a way to console them self.

Constantly being your child’s cheerleader and letting them know you are by their side and routing them along will help them feel better and want to please you in the end. Be patient and loving and you will see your child’s confidence levels soar and the habit disappear.
