Lost and Found: Keeping Tabs on Important Documents

Looking for something? It’s what your mum always used to say, and it was good advice. Take a deep breath. Retrace your steps and double-check everything twice, even if you’re sure it won’t be there. Ask people around you if they saw where you put it.

Don’t panic. Most documents that are lost can be recovered, though in some cases you may incur a small fee for getting a replacement. If you’ve misplaced either part of your driving licence for example you can call the DVLA and pay for a new one on 08702 400 009. The same should be the case for insurance certificates. It’s always a good idea to contact your insurer if for example your home insurance or car insurance certificates take a wander.

Get Organised
It may not be an appealing prospect but it’s worth spending some time putting your important documents into a filing system. Also make sure you put everything away as soon as you’ve finished with it. If you’re generally a messy person, designate a big box or separate areas for those important things.

Colour coding can help, as can making a list of documents and where they are stored. Also remember to keep similar items together.

If you know you’ll be out of the house for a long time then give your most important documents to a trusted friend or family member, ideally in a combination locked container. Always keep important papers out of sight.

Out with the Old
Have regular cleanouts, where you remove documents that are no longer important and shred them. If you are unable to purge your old documents then make digital copies and store them securely. Having things stored on your computer, rather than on a scrap of paper has the added advantage of that handy ‘search’ tool!

Taking out the trash will allow you to find relevant information more easily when you need to. But always remember to check them twice and be careful not to shred anything that doesn’t relate to you.

If you ever suspect that your property has been stolen you should notify your local police authority at once. Even a suspicion that your rubbish has been tampered with could be worth keeping an eye on, as identity thieves often target your refuse to find out your personal details.

Remember getting organised and staying that way might be tedious. However the amount of time it will take filing and colour-coding is nothing compared to the hours you could spend tearing your hair out, hunting for elusive bits of paper!
