Cookers Buying Guide

When buying a new cooker it is important that you take into consideration all the features that may be important to you. There is so much out there to choose from which can often be confusing, making the right decision harder to come by. The aim of this article is to help you make this decision by explaining the differences between these features.

The first thing to be aware of is that all cookers are freestanding. This means that you will have to leave a space for them between your existing kitchen units. It is important that you measure the space available before you start looking at your new cookers to make sure that you know exactly what will fit in your kitchen otherwise you may have to face additional costs to return your cooker.

Another really important factor to consider is the fuel type of your new cooker. Gas or electric? Of course this may be decided for you by what is available in your area, but if not it is useful to point out the benefits of each. Gas hobs are praised by cooks and chefs alike for creating instant and controllable heat that is essential for demanding cooking. Electric on the other hands is better for quick oven pre-heat times and multifunctional cooking. If you want the best of both worlds, why not opt for a dual fuel model and have a gas hob with an electric oven? Remember, if you do choose a gas appliance and you live in a flat, you must make sure that the model you choose comes with a flame safety device.

If you decide on an electric cooker it is important to have an understanding of the energy rating. All electric appliances are rated for their energy efficiency. The more efficient the appliance the less energy it will waste and therefore the less it will cost you to run. This is important for two reasons. The first is to help to protect the environment and the second is to reduce your energy bills.

Many cookers now come with self cleaning features in the oven to save you the hassle of scrubbing and scraping the burnt on food and grease away. Stay clean liners use a catalytic coating to burn away and baked on food or grease whereas pyrolytic ovens have a special programme that heats the oven the exceptionally high temperatures, turning any baked on food to ash.

If you have young children around and safety is a concern make sure that you look out for child safety locks and air cooled doors. Child safety locks prevent you or your children accidently turning on your cooker and creating a fire hazard. Air cooled double and triple glazed doors make sure that the doors remain cool to the touch, reducing the risk of you or anyone else burning them self.

It is important that you choose a cooker with the features that ‘you’ need to make sure that you get the most out of your new cooker.
