We all need to watch what we eat, there’s no question about that. Unfortunately, for those of us suffering from diabetes, proper nutrition is much more than just a responsibility, it’s imperative. Diabetes sufferers can’t afford to slack on planning proper meals and getting enough exercise.

Being your own Boss
To keep track of your diet and exercise, you should make an effort to just not let yourself get away with anything. You have to be your own personal drill instructor and hold yourself accountable when you fall off the wagon. You may be surprised at how effective something like a weekly diabetes diet tracker and diabetes exercise monitor can be. By simply knowing that you’ll have to document it in your Diabetic log book every time you slip in your routine, it can be a lot easier to maintain good habits.

Keeping Track
With a monthly diabetes journal or diabetic manual, you can keep track of how effective a new diet or exercise program can be, as well. Documenting your energy level and mood day by day can be an excellent way to remain enthusiastic about staying in good condition.

Collecting Recipes
It’s a good idea to look online for recipe ideas and develop your own collection of meals you love, but are diabetic-friendly. It can be easy to get bored of food when you’re following a strict diet and you don’t know a wide variety of healthy recipes. Here are a few meal ideas to get you started:

•Maple Oatmeal

We know what you’re thinking: “Blech! Oatmeal!”
However, maple syrup with the right touch of flavor is a time tested method of transforming oatmeal from a bland paste into something surprisingly tasty. Try oatmeal with various sugar free syrups until you find one you like.

•Omelettes

Loaded with sausage and bacon and cheddar cheese, omelettes are kind of a suicide-by-cholesterol for just about anyone. For a more health-friendly omelette, use one full egg with two egg whites, replace the cheddar and Swiss with cottage cheese, and use some of your favorite vegetables fried in olive oil. You can add some minced garlic and herbs to add a little extra flavor.

•Burgers

Ground turkey or chicken makes a good substitute for ground beef, though if you just can’t part with red meat, extra lean ground beef is fine, too. Try stuffing the burgers with feta cheese and vegetables and baking them in the oven for a healthier alternative to the slab of beef we typically associate with hamburgers.

Keep Exploring Healthy Food
These are just a few ideas, of course. You can try them if you like, but there are a million healthy alternatives. We can’t give you an exact program to follow, as so much depends on your body type and activity level, but some of the main things to keep in mind would be...

•Get most of your sugars from fruit, and remember that the riper the fruit is, the more sugar it has.

•Keep fat content to a minimum, and look for unsaturated fats.

•And, keep a fairly regular routine. This means: Eat meals and snacks at about the same time every day, keep your daily carbohydrate level at about the same number, and exercise and take your medicine at a regular time.
