| | | | | Travel Cots - Things You Need to Know Before You Buy by John Lewis | | | Safety First
The baby’s safety is of the utmost importance. Before purchasing any baby cot, ensure that it meets government safety standards by checking the manufacturer’s website or a consumer reporting agency for recall information. Although travel cots usually have mesh sides, some baby cots may have bars. If present, bars must be spaced no farther apart than 43mm-65mm so that baby’s head cannot get stuck. On any baby cot, all hardware should be inaccessible to the child. In addition, moving parts such as the folding mechanisms or drop down sides should be stable when locked and locks should be easily operated by an adult but inaccessible to the child.
Size and Style
Baby travel cots come in several sizes and styles. Some are suitable for sleeping only while others can double as a playpen. A bassinet style, which is smaller and lighter in weight, may be preferable for young babies but cannot be used once the child is sitting unaided. Some travel cots are simply enclosed sleeping areas with no provision for actually containing the baby. For maximum versatility, a larger travel cot with secure sides that allows baby to safely play as well as sleep may be preferred.
Advantages
The advantages to a travel cot are many. Designed to be portable, travel cots fold up easily and compactly. They are extremely versatile and can be set up anywhere. In addition to being used for sleeping, the cots can also provide a safe place for a baby to play. Many styles have a mesh that covers the top to protect baby while sleeping or playing outside, such as while camping. Some come with a shade cover to protect them from the sun, as well.
Mattress
Baby travel cots come with a thin mattress that is designed for portability. For home use, some parents may consider the purchase of a more substantial mattress. Although the original mattress should be fine for the life of the cot, if a replacement mattress is required, ensure that it fits correctly and snugly inside the cot and that baby cannot become wedged between the mattress and the mesh sides.
Other Considerations
For comfort and ease while travelling, become familiar with cot usage and get the baby accustomed to sleeping in a cot whilst at home. Set up the cot and allow baby to get comfortable with it for sleep and play. Consider purchasing a darkening cover to allow baby to sleep well while travelling even when sharing a room where the lights must be on.
Folding baby travel cots are the perfect answer for busy families on the go. Whether for occasional travel to visit family during the holidays or more frequent use while camping or at home, a travel cot is a welcome addition to any nursery. | | | | Article Source : Article-treasure.com | | Publication date : 08-06-2010 | | | | Article by John Lewis | | | | John Lewis offers a range of baby products including; travel cots, prams and pushchairs from leading brand names.
