| | | | | Give your best! by Sukhpreet Kaur swahney | | | All of us want to be genius and pave our ways to ultimate success and recognition. In short, most of us strive to be peak performers. To be a peak performer is a difficult but not an impossible task; it demands constant discipline, attention, learning and up gradation of both professional and personal traits.
Here are a few steps towards being a superior achiever –
1. Prioritize and Make the Connection – Prioritize projects that address long-term strategic goals. Also, look at everything you work on throughout the day – whether it’s a project or meeting – as part of an integrated whole. By maintaining a big picture perspective, you may be able to identify ways to consolidate related assignments, such as those focused on a particular business objective.
2. Streamline Processes – Carefully examine how you manage each of your daily responsibilities. Is there a valid reason – why certain tasks are handled in a particular way, or are you simply following routines? One way to discover more efficient methods of working is by observing how others approach similar tasks or projects.
3. Be Realistic – While you want to set high standards for your work, if they are unrealistic or impossible to achieve you’ll create barriers to accomplishing your goals. Take the time to assess your strengths and weaknesses, and don’t be afraid to ask others for guidance if you need help to achieve your career goals.
4. Don’t Hesitate – Even individuals who are considered peak performers occasionally put off working on unpleasant or unchallenging assignments. However, procrastination can hinder your professional success if it becomes a habit. One effective way to overcome inertia is to reduce a project into smaller, more manageable tasks.
5. Become Goal-Oriented – To be consistently successful, one needs to possess a clear vision of what one wants to accomplish. ‘Rooted in clearly defined personal values’ should be the basis for your day-to-day action. Instead of drifting randomly from assignment to assignment, approach tasks with purpose. Develop the ability to differentiate between essential and nonessential tasks to maximize your work efforts and minimize unnecessary delays.
6. Be An Expert – Peak performers are masters of their area of expertise. A commitment to excellence allows them to settle for nothing less than their best effort in any given challenge.
7. Think Positively – Optimism is a vital trait of a peak performer. Develop confidence and optimism and try changing the way you look at problems – identify them as opportunities for solutions. This positive attitude goes a long way toward explaining the super achiever’s ability to bounce back from adversity. Always thrive on the opportunity too improve.
8. Maintains Focus – Stay focused on your job. Despite constant commotion that could disrupt their efforts, peak performers have the ability to focus their attention on the task at hand. Keeping motivated in, of course, key to this kind of concentration. Therefore, make sure that minor obstacles don’t block your progress.
9. Seek Outside Support – Keep learning as peak performers have superb self-knowledge. They are intimately aware of their strengths and limitations. When faced with the need for support, do not hesitate to call on co-workers, teammates, family or friends. Never try being a ‘Lone Ranger’, preferring to tackle challenges alone, instead recognize that co-operation leads to efficiency, and don’t miss the opportunity to offer your assistance when asked.
10. Take One Risk Everyday – In order to become a peak performer, you must be able to take risks. Daily risk-taking is a confidence-boosting exercise and a requirement for those who won’t let unrealistic fears stand in the way of their goals. Everyone feels some fear – but the peak performers, overcome these fears by tapping the reserve of inner strength built on taking risks regularly. You must begin by purposely taking one risk each day.
11. Seek Results, Not Perfection – Peak performers understand that perfectionists seem to have only two standards of performance, give a perfect performance or forget it. Since everything cannot be done perfectly, perfectionists jeopardize their performance by simply not attempting any task they can’t or don’t know how to do well.
By focusing on becoming a peak performer, one can enjoy numerous benefits, including better work habits and improved efficiency. At the same time, one can develop the qualities necessary to continue advancing in one’s career. Also, one is able to set positive examples for co-workers to follow!
