Mid-Range Consumer Wireless Routers - The ESR-9750 and ESR-9750G

But how do they stack up against the “usual suspects” in the consumer wireless arena? Linksys has always been the top runner in this market for its WRT160n & WRT310n models. Let’s see how the new EnGenius routers - ESR-9750 and 9750G stack up against this market titan.
As mid-range consumer wireless routers, the ESR-9750 and 9750G are comparable to the Linksys WRT160n and the Linksys WRT310n. Physically speaking, both sets of routers have four LAN ports for wired computing. The ESR-9750G and the Linksys WRT310n have 10/100/1000 gigabit switches, which increase the speed of wired communication for such devices.
Similar to Linksys, EnGenius provides the expected basic router functionality; such as, SPI firewall, VPN pass-thru and DHCP server. Both the Linksys and ESR have “good neighbor” technology with the “Auto” bandwidth setting which helps control digital traffic. In addition, the routers have easy-to-use setups, WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) push button and web-based utilities to manage router operations.
The EnGenius ESR-9750 and 9750G models and Linksys WRT160n & WRT310n models use the latest 802.11n technology standard, which runs 6 times faster than the previous standard. All four models are notably faster than their 802.11g counterparts. In addition, they all use smart antennas with MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) wireless technology. This latest advance gives a single router the ability to manage multiple wireless throughputs without backup and delay. For the end user, this means fewer dropped signals, slowdowns and pauses.
However, EnGenius took this one step further. Unlike Linksys WRT160n & WRT310n models, the ESR ESR-9750 and 9750G models have three smart antennas; a feature reserved for high-end home routers costing close to $200. The more smart antennas; the more throughput can be handled and the wider the router’s wireless coverage. In other words, the ESR models, with their three antennas, will offer more consistent wireless transmissions over a wider coverage area than Linksys WRT160n & WRT310n models. You’ll experience fewer dropped signals and almost no dead spots in your home.
Not only can the ESR routers handle more transmissions, they can handle more wireless devices. If you are a home with several wireless computers plus a wireless gaming machine, the ESR models can better manage multiple transmissions from multiple devices at one time. While you watch a podcast from your laptop in your room, your roommate can play Halo on the Xbox from his room with little to no interference.
Capitalizing on their experience in the business arena, EnGenius added two other distinct details to their smart antenna technology, which are not available on the Linksys model or any other router in the consumer market: Universal Repeater Feature and Detachable Antennas. This sets the ESR models from its Linksys counterpart for both range and performance.
First, the EnGenius routers have a unique feature called the “Universal Repeater,” also known as a “wireless range extender”. The EnGenius’s Wireless Range Extender is the easy way to increase the effective coverage of your wireless network. Unlike adding a traditional access point to your network to expand wireless coverage, the EnGenius’s Wireless Range Extender does not need to be connected to the network by a data cable. Just put it within range of your main access point or wireless router, and it "bounces" the signals out to remote wireless devices. With this technology, the wireless signal is redistributed to all corners of a home, resulting in an extended wireless communication range. The wireless range extender virtually eliminates dead spots making it an ideal wireless router for larger homes.
Moreover, the ESR antennas are upgradable. For added power, range and wireless performance, you can replace the standard antennas with a more powerful set. This may be the perfect solution for those homes that eventually expect to use extensive amounts of wireless streaming media; such as, video conferencing, online gaming, and home video sharing.
The ESR models - ESR-9750 and 9750G have one more added feature that makes them stand out from the Linksys models: Green Ethernet. The ESR models use 50% less energy than Linksys making them more efficient and less costly to operate. When a port or wireless connection isn’t being used, it essentially “times out.” Therefore, the router is only fully operational when needed. This not only helps reduce the daily operation costs, it also helps protect the router itself by preventing it from running hot and, as a result, giving it a longer life-span.
The ESR-9750 and 9750G have all the same key features as the Linksys WRT160n and 310n. As mid-range routers, all four are adequate for the stress of daily home use. As always, Linksys provides a solid product that does exactly what it should. However, EnGenius Technologies, with their expanded knowledge of wireless technology, has taken that basic router and given it more muscle and more lasting power for exactly the same price. EnGenius has not only successfully matched with Linksys, they have perhaps set a new standard in home wireless technology.
